A market maker expanding across markets and trading strategies.

The business evolved from an energy-derivatives focus into a diversified proprietary trading and market-making organization operating across multiple asset classes.

As the markets, products and trading opportunities broadened, hiring required more than exceptional individual traders. Each desk needed relevant strategy expertise, sound risk judgment and the quantitative and technical resources to compete.

Senior research and engineering appointments also had to fit a collaborative operating model in which desk leaders, quants and technologists work closely together.

Recruit people who can lead a desk and make the strategy work.

Identifying a successful trader was not enough. The client needed desk leaders capable of operating within its risk and technology environment, research leadership to extend quantitative capability, and specialist engineers accustomed to performance-sensitive production systems.

01 / PERFORMANCE

Understand attributable results

Distinguish the candidate's individual trading decisions, capital requirements and risk process from the surrounding platform.

02 / LEADERSHIP

Build a desk, not just trade it

Assess judgment, autonomy, ability to develop people and fit with a flat, collaborative trading culture.

03 / TRANSITION

Make competitive hiring feasible

Engage successful passive candidates discreetly and address restrictions, bonuses and realistic transition timing.

Trading leadership, quantitative research and critical technology.

Across more than ten placements, Ancilla supported three interdependent talent priorities. Each required its own assessment standard while contributing to the same trading business.
